The famous Silk Road does not only cross northern China before it connect to Central Asian states. Mongolia Empire was an integral part of for the development of this famous trade road, with Karakorum the original capital city of the great empire also integrated into the Silk Road. This trip offers travelers a unique experience of enjoying diverse sceneries all different natural zones of Mongolia and various ethnic cultures from the central and western part of the country, yet following the traces of medieval merchants. The Mongolian part of the tour ends in Yarant border post and goes continues into the territory of Xingjian Uigur Autonomous region of China. The Chinese part of the expedition will be arranged by our partners from the autonomous region of China.

TOUR ITINERARY:

Day 1 Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Chinggis Khaan International airport and transfer to 3-4 star hotel. Half day city tour including visits to National History Museum and Zaisan hill if time permits.

Day 2 Ulaanbaatar
Enjoy full day city tour with visits to Sukhbaatar square, National history Museum, Gandan Monastery – the largest active Buddhist monastery of Mongolia and Natural History Museum. In the evening, have an excursion to Zaisan Hill before being entertained by performance of Mongolian traditional folklore concert. Overnight in hotel.

Day 3 Bayangobi and Hugnukhaan (280 kms)
Today we are starting our journey to western Mongolia. It takes about 5 hours drive on paved road to reach our first destination – Bayangobi area. After being settled in tourist camp we are exploring Bayangobi sand dunes and Hugnukhaan Mountain. Today we are also enjoying an hour of horse riding or trekking by the camp as an option. Overnight in Mongolian gers.

Day 4 Karakorum, Tsenkher Jiguur hot spa (230 kms)
This is an interesting day as we are visiting the symbolic ruins of Karakorum, the ancient capital city of Mongolia and Erdenezuu Monastery the first and one of the largest Buddhist Monasteries in Mongolia on the way. After having lunch we will continue our drive to Tsenkher Jiguur hot spa sight. Take hot spa in the evening and overnight in ger camp.

Day 5 Terhiin Tsagaan Nuur Lake, Khorgo (250 kms)
With packed lunch on the way we are traveling across central Mongolian green plateau and arrive in a ger camp settled on the shore of the beautiful lake of Terhiin Tsagaan Nuur. Enroute we are visiting mysterious Taikhar Rock, central Mongolian pretty green town of Tsetserleg and Khorgo dead volcano sight.

Day 6 Khag Nuur
Today’s journey is a quite a lengthy part of the journey. We are traveling across some of the most beautiful parts of Khangai area and arrive in a small camp on the bank of Khag Nuur lake.

Day 7 Bor Khalzan Els, part of famous Mongol els sands
Travel via another beautiful lake of Khar Nuur to reach the amazing composure of Nature – Bor Khalzan Els sight, where we will be astonished to see springs flowing out of the bottom of huge sand dunes to feed beautiful oasis of the area. Overnight in tented camping on the vegetated bank of the spring.

Day 8 Khar Us Nuur lake, Khovd town
Driving along the northern shore of extensive Khar Us Nuur Lake, we are arriving in historic Khovd town, the center of western Mongolia. We have plenty of chances to view the rich birdlife in the lake. Overnight in tourist camp on the bank of Buyant river close to the center of Khovd town.

Day 9 Khar Us Nuur lake, Khovd town
Have a short trip to Khovd town from our base camp to explore the town, which was one of the centers of Manchurian colonization of Mongolia during 17th- 19th centuries. Visit the local museum, the ruins of walls of Manchurian governor’s court and local market. Overnight in gers at the camp.

Day 10 Gurvan Senkher Cave, Altai Mountain Range
Today we are going across the largest Mongolian range Altai Mountains and arrive in Bodonch canyon to spend the second night in tented camping in this stunning natural setting among the majestic rocky mountains of Altai range. On the way we are also visiting Gurvan Senkher cave, the largest cave in Mongolia that houses number of prehistoric rock inscriptions. We will also see a number of ancient graves and deer stones at the entrance of Bodonch canyon.

Day 11 Yarant Border and Xingjian Uigur Autonomous region
This the last day in Mongolia we are traveling about 150 kms north to arrive in Bulgan soum, the westernmost town of Mongolia. You are crossing the Mongolian Chinese border with our special permissions through the Yarant border post to enter the territory of Xingjian Uigur Autonomous region of China.
